How is the heart checked?
The heart is checked via the use of an Electrocardiogram (more commonly known as an ECG or EKG) medical device which measures the electrical activity of the heart. With each heartbeat the heart emits a series of electrical discharge spikes that are recorded via the use of electrodes affixed to the patient's body.
The shape and pattern of the spikes can assist in diagnosing a wide range of heart problems such as:
  • muscle defect;
  • enlargement of the heart;
  • congenital defects;
  • heart valve disease;
  • arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms);
  • tachycardia or bradycardia (heart rate too fast or too slow);
  • ectopic heartbeat;
  • coronary artery disease;
  • inflammation of the heart (myocarditis);
  • changes in the amount of electrolytes (chemicals in the blood); and
  • myocardial infarction (heart attack), past or present.
What is the Procedure?
Using state-of-the-art equipment and under the supervision of an experienced doctor your medical history will be compiled to identify your risk factors, and subject to diagnosis, a non-invasive test of your cardiovascular function may be undertaken.
Possible tests include:
  1. Blood Pressure, ECG
  2. Exercise Stress Test
  3. Doppler study of your legs to check your circulation in the legs.
  4. Use of a Holter monitor, if necessary, for 24-48 hours in order to monitor your heartbeat.
